Domestic Violence is a Crime.  It can happen to anyone, regardless of social, religious or racial background.  Domestic Violence is not only physical.  Domestic abuse also includes sexual, financial, emotional and mental abuse.  Everyone involved is affected and needs help and support, particularly women and children.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sudarshan Bhuhi MBE, established Apna Ghar  (now Aanchal Limited) within Community Links in 1985 in response to a demand from Asian women who suffer from the results of domestic violence.  In 20 years of operation, Apna Ghar has grown to provide specialised services that are easily accessible by women and children affected by domestic violence within the Newham community. Their services are focused on supporting minorities from the Indian subcontinent that represent a large proportion of East London boroughs.
Aanchal’s staff offer specialised skills that recognise these cultural distinctions and are able to overcome sensitivities by speaking the various languages of their service users.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Asian culture dictates that matters of the home must remain within the confines of the home. This isolates women from society and prevents women from gaining information, knowing their rights and developing towards a different life.
These uniquely cultural influences add to the complexity of situations of domestic violence and led to a demand for specialised support for individuals affected by domestic violence in these cultural groups.
In response to this demand Aanchal Limited was started as Apna Ghar in 1985 as a charitable project under the management of Community Links. They are based in Stratford and mainly operate within the Borough of Newham & Tower Hamlets. They provide much needed support on a national, and on occasion international level, to Asian women and children who suffer from the results of domestic violence.
After twenty years of operation they have grown such that in 2005, it was decided to establish Aanchal Limited as an independent charity.

Its dual objective is to relieve the distress caused by domestic violence and to do preventative work with young people.
